*My life could have been so different if I had kept on studying Philosophy at college rather than dropping out for an academic year and falling in love for the second time with computer programming. But then I probably wouldn’t have met my wife or had my four kids. There’s some philosophical thought there—not the usual ‘Who am I?’ or ‘What am I?’ questions, but rather, ‘What could/would I have been?’ Maybe I wouldn’t have MS. Would I still have my wife and kids? Or perhaps different ones who would have missed out this time around? There’s definitely at least one, or even many, ‘Sliding Doors’ moments in life. Would it help to explore the alternatives—maybe alternatives that we feel we’ve already been through?
We live in an age of quite astonishing scientific discovery. We can map the human genome, peer back to the dawn of the universe, and build machines that learn at a dizzying pace. Science provides us with an incredibly powerful toolkit for understanding how things work, from the quantum dance of particles to the intricate choreography of ecosystems. Yet, for all our sophisticated models and empirical data, there are certain questions that seem to stubbornly resist easy answers – questions that nudge us beyond the laboratory and into a different kind of inquiry. What, fundamentally, are we? What is the true nature of the reality our instruments probe? And how can we be truly confident in the knowledge we gather? These aren’t just fringe concerns; they are foundational, and they lead us directly to philosophy – a discipline that, far from being an archaic pursuit, acts as a crucial partner to science in our quest for understanding. For those of us who’ve spent years in the structured, logical world of computer science and IT, delving into philosophy can feel like exploring the ultimate source code of thought itself.
Consider the profound mystery of human nature. Neuroscience has made incredible strides in mapping the brain, identifying neural correlates for everything from memory to emotion. We can see how neurons fire, how brain regions light up during specific tasks. It’s tempting, especially from a systems engineering perspective, to view the brain as an extraordinarily complex biological computer, with consciousness as an emergent property – a kind of sophisticated operating system booted up by intricate hardware. Daniel Dennett [1], for instance, has long argued for a materialist understanding of consciousness, suggesting that its seemingly inexplicable features might dissolve under closer, more scientifically informed scrutiny. Yet, the “hard problem” of consciousness, as philosopher David Chalmers termed it (though Thomas Nagel [2] articulated a similar challenge with his famous “What is it like to be a bat?” paper), remains. Even if we understood every physical process in the brain perfectly, would that truly explain the subjective, first-person experience of being you, or me, or indeed, a bat? Could we ever truly bridge the gap between objective neural firings and the richness of subjective awareness – the redness of red, the pang of regret? This is where philosophy steps in, not to provide the empirical data, but to help us frame the questions, to analyse the concepts we’re using, and to scrutinise the very assumptions that underpin our scientific investigations. Then there’s the perennial debate about free will. Our best physical laws, from Newtonian mechanics to quantum physics (in most interpretations), describe a universe that evolves according to deterministic or probabilistic rules. If our brains are physical systems governed by these laws, where does genuine freedom of choice fit in? Are our decisions simply the outputs of a complex algorithm running on our neural hardware, predetermined by prior states and inputs? Or is there some way in which conscious agency can genuinely influence outcomes? From a computational viewpoint, this is a fascinating puzzle. If free will is an illusion, our sense of authorship over our actions is profound self-deception. If it’s real, it poses a major challenge to a purely physicalist worldview and opens up deep questions about the interface between mind and matter. These aren’t just abstract concerns; they shape our ethical frameworks, our legal systems, and how we approach the development of artificial intelligence that might one day claim a similar kind of agency.
Next, let’s turn our gaze to the nature of reality itself. Physics, particularly quantum mechanics, has revealed a universe far stranger than our everyday intuitions suggest. The comfortable, solid world of classical physics gives way to a realm of probabilities, wave-particle duality, and the unsettling influence of the observer. The very act of measuring a quantum system seems to affect its state, a phenomenon that has sparked endless debate amongst physicists and philosophers alike. Does this imply, as some interpretations suggest, that reality at its most fundamental level is not fixed until observed? This echoes ancient philosophical debates. Idealists like George Berkeley [5] argued that “to be is to be perceived,” suggesting reality is fundamentally mind-dependent. While most scientists wouldn’t go that far, quantum mechanics undeniably forces us to reconsider the relationship between the observer and the observed, pushing the boundaries of what we mean by “objective reality.” Then there’s the even more mind-bending simulation hypothesis, popularised by thinkers like Nick Bostrom [6], which posits that our entire perceived reality could be a sophisticated computer simulation created by a more advanced civilisation. While this sounds like pure science fiction, it’s a logically coherent idea that forces us to confront fundamental epistemological questions: what evidence could possibly refute it? What are the ultimate constituents of reality? Physicist John Archibald Wheeler’s [7] provocative “it from bit” hypothesis suggests that information might be more fundamental than matter or energy – that the physical world itself arises from underlying informational processes. For anyone who has worked with the way information can be structured, processed, and used to generate complex behaviours in computational systems, this idea has a certain resonance. It paints a picture of the universe as perhaps, at its deepest level, an information-processing system, prompting us to ask what kind of “code” it runs on. Philosophy provides the arena to explore these conceptual deep dives, critically examining the assumptions and implications of such radical ideas about the fabric of existence.
This naturally leads us to the question of knowledge: epistemology. How do we know what we claim to know? Science prides itself on its rigorous methodology: hypothesis, experimentation, peer review, falsifiability. This empirical approach, broadly aligning with the philosophical school of empiricism championed by figures like John Locke [8] (who saw the mind as a tabula rasa filled by experience) and David Hume [9], has proven incredibly effective. Yet, philosophy reminds us to examine even these trusted methods. David Hume’s critique of inductive reasoning, for example, remains a profound challenge. We observe a pattern (the sun rising every day) and infer a general rule (the sun will always rise). This is the basis of most scientific prediction and, indeed, how machine learning algorithms extrapolate from training data. But, as Hume pointedly asked, what logical justification do we have for assuming the future will resemble the past? There isn’t one, beyond the brute fact that it has, so far. This doesn’t invalidate science, of course, but it introduces a healthy dose of intellectual humility, reminding us that scientific knowledge is provisional, always open to revision. Philosophy of science explores the nature of scientific explanation, the role of paradigms (as Thomas Kuhn described), and the demarcation between science and pseudoscience. It helps us understand the strengths and limitations of our knowledge-seeking enterprises. From a computer science perspective, this is akin to understanding the inherent limitations of algorithms or the conditions under which a model might fail. We build systems based on logic and evidence, but philosophy prompts us to examine the bedrock of that logic and the ultimate grounding of that evidence. Are there kinds of knowledge that lie outside the scientific domain, such as moral or aesthetic truths? If so, how are these known and justified? These are thorny questions that require philosophical tools – conceptual analysis, logical argumentation, and the careful weighing of different perspectives.
My own journey through the world of information technology, designing systems, debugging complex code, and trying to make disparate components work together harmoniously, has, perhaps surprisingly, equipped me with a particular lens for appreciating philosophy. When faced with a complex philosophical argument, there’s an almost instinctual urge to parse it: What are its primary inputs (assumptions)? What are the key variables (defined terms)? What logical operations connect them? Where are the potential failure points or logical inconsistencies (fallacies)? It’s a form of systems analysis applied to ideas. The IT world is built on layers of abstraction; you can work with a high-level programming language without needing to know the machine code, or use an application without understanding the operating system kernel. Philosophy, too, often operates in layers, from fundamental metaphysics (the nature of being) to applied ethics (how to act in specific situations). And just as in software development, where flawed initial assumptions or poor architectural choices can lead to cascading problems, unexamined philosophical presuppositions can lead to muddled thinking or problematic real-world outcomes. For example, our societal approach to artificial intelligence will be profoundly shaped by our underlying philosophical views on consciousness, agency, and what constitutes personhood. Philosophy encourages us to make these foundational layers explicit, to test their coherence, and to understand their interdependencies.
Ultimately, philosophy isn’t about delivering a neat set of universally accepted answers, much like scientific inquiry is an ongoing process of refinement rather than a destination. Instead, it provides a framework for critical thinking, a rich historical context of humanity’s deepest inquiries, and a demand for intellectual rigour. It challenges us to question our assumptions, clarify our concepts, and strive for coherence in our understanding of ourselves and the universe. In an era where information (and misinformation) proliferates, and where technological advancements raise profound ethical and existential questions, the skills honed by philosophical inquiry – clear reasoning, critical evaluation, and the ability to grapple with complex, multifaceted problems – are more valuable than ever. Socrates is famously attributed with the idea that “the unexamined life is not worth living” [10]. Philosophy is the engine of that examination. It complements the scientific quest for knowledge by interrogating the very nature of that knowledge, its limits, and its implications. It ensures that as we build increasingly powerful models of the world, we also reflect deeply on what it all means and how we should responsibly navigate our place within it. It’s about not just understanding the system, but also understanding the purpose of the system, and perhaps even questioning who designed it and for what ultimate end.
