There it sits. Waxing, waning, reliably yanking the tides about and giving werewolves their scheduling cues. The Moon is so aggressively normal that we’ve stopped seeing it. It’s a prop, a nightlight, a convenient calendar for the hormonally turbulent. We’ve kicked its dust and planted a flag and, frankly, got a bit bored. The Apollo programme ended because the public decided moon rocks were less compelling than new episodes of Gilligan’s Island.

We may have made a colossal category error.

Forget the face in the craters. Look at the physics. The Moon is in a near-perfect geosynchronous lock—one side always facing us, the far side permanently averted like a Victorian spinster at a bawdy joke. This is not, in solar-system terms, normal. Most moons trundle about showing all sides like a slowly rotating kebab. Ours doesn’t. The mathematics of its size and orbit suggest something else, too: it’s preposterously large for a captured body. It shouldn’t be here, neatly positioned at precisely the distance and diameter required to perfectly occlude the Sun during a total eclipse. That’s not a coincidence. That’s an underlined sentence.

Then there’s the ringing. In 1969, Apollo 12 deliberately crashed its spent ascent module into the lunar surface. The Moon reverberated for over an hour. It rang like a bell. A geologically dead lump of rock ought not to behave like an empty cathedral. Hollow, or at least structurally suspect? The Moon, it seems, is not the solid, inert pebble we thought we knew. It’s a Fabergé egg with a kilometre-thick regolith shell, mass-calibrated to hide whatever’s inside—or whatever’s been sealed out.

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the ‘improbable’ things ancient humans built, possibly to shout across millennia. Göbekli Tepe, deliberately and carefully buried by its creators, a story in limestone t-charts we still can’t parse. The Longyou Caves in China, vast, precise, carved from bedrock with no tool-marks and no discernible purpose, later flooded like a secret meant to pickle in perpetuity. Easter Island’s stone heads with their heavy red hats, staring mutely at a sky they can’t explain. The Kailasa Temple at Ellora, a building that shouldn’t exist—a single, 200,000-tonne temple carved top-down out of a hillside, a negative-space miracle. And Baalbek in Lebanon, where the Romans plonked their temple on a foundation containing an eight-hundred-tonne block of hewn granite that nobody’s engineering can comfortably explain.

These are all, in their own way, messages. Someone, somewhere in the deep past, believed that stacking impossibly heavy stones in suggestive arrangements was the only letter that survives a thousand generations of illiteracy. The problem is, we got the letter but lost the cipher. We stand before the Moai, we conduct LiDAR surveys of buried temples, we stroke our chins and say, “Ritual purposes.” Which may as well be archaeology-speak for “buggered if I know.” The intended meaning has evaporated, leaving only the spooky silhouette.

This is a design flaw in the Monolith concept. Arthur C. Clarke’s black slab worked because it was aggressively unnatural—a perfect 1:4:9 ratio, immune to erosion, doing inscrutable things with ape-men’s brains. But even that was ambiguous. The apes didn’t get the instruction manual; they just got an evolutionary shove. A truly permanent message needs to be the kind of thing you trip over every single night, so utterly in-plain-sight that you forget to question it, until the day someone runs the numbers and feels their stomach drop.

Which brings us back to the Moon.

The Silurian Hypothesis, proposed by astrophysicists Adam Frank and Gavin Schmidt, asks a simple question: how would we even know if an advanced civilisation existed on Earth millions of years ago? The answer is: we might not. Plate tectonics and deep time are a cosmic shredder. The only surviving artefacts would be the ones we mistake for geology. The Silurians, if they existed, didn’t leave a plaque. They may well have left a satellite.

Think of the Moon not as a tombstone but as a sticky note on the fridge of the solar system. An evacuation notice. The previous tenants didn’t ascend to a higher dimension in a blaze of transhuman glory; they quietly called it a day, built a hollow planetoid with the resonant frequency of a gong, tucked a message inside it, and left. What does it say?

I’m leading this I’m putting my money on some variant of: “Watch out. Earth isn’t quite as cosy as you think.

A cosmic review, maybe? Five stars for the continents, one star for the periodic mass extinctions and the tendency of the biosphere to occasionally try to murder everything with lungs. The Moon is a Monolith that wasn’t a test—it was an Amber Alert. A warning that we, in our mundane arrogance, have mistaken for a lump of cheese.

The paranoid wonder arrives when you lie on your back on a clear night and look up at the thing. That silvery disc isn’t just a passive witness to our smallness. It’s a billboard. It’s been patiently orbiting our entire evolutionary arc, waiting for us to get clever enough to feel the chill. The builders didn’t need us to understand the wiring diagram of their civilisation. They just needed us to grasp the subtext: something went wrong here before.

And if that was hiding in the sky, right where every living creature since the first synapse fired has had a clear line of sight to it, what else are we sleepwalking past? Which of our everyday certainties—the solid ground, the reliable seasons, the benign hum of the planet—is merely the wallpaper over a manuscript of previous catastrophes?

The Moon isn’t a relic. It’s a cautionary tale thats been there all this time. We’d do well to double-tap it before the next extinction event decides we’ve been far too complacent for far too long…

The Moon has been hanging there so long we’ve stopped seeing it. But the coincidences stack up badly: the geosynchronous lock, the impossible size-to-orbit ratio, the way it rings like a bell when you hit it. What if the most obvious object in our sky is actually a message we’ve been ignoring?

      Marduk stuck the moon in the night sky. Its part of the remains of the end of level chaos baddie, Tiamat. It’s got to be true, it’s written in cuneiform.
